Education

Gunnison Valley Health System is committed to excellence in both employee and public education. We offer a variety of classes for the current or aspiring HealthCare Provider as well as the general public. We support the advancement of individual skills in the arena of emergency service and community response.

Safe Sitter:

Teaches youth life and safety skills for when they are home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. Young teens are trained in first aid, indoor and outdoor safety, and how to handle household emergencies. Graduates are prepared with the knowledge they need to prevent problems and handle unexpected emergencies.

This class is scheduled based on interest. If you don’t see a SafeSitter class posted on the Course Registration page, please call (970) 641-7276 to inquire.

CPR-First Aid:

All of our instructors are American Heart Association (AHA) certified, all CPR and First Aid course are affiliated with the AHA, and all AHA certifications offered are valid for two years.

Heartsaver CPR:

Includes adult, child, and infant CPR, choking, and AED. It is intended for the general public, foster parents, and any other person who does not work in a clinical patient care role.

Heartsaver First Aid:

Basic first aid for the general public, including general principles, medical, trauma, and environmental emergencies.

Healthcare Provider CPR:

Includes adult, child, and infant CPR, choking, AED and BVM. It is intended for healthcare providers in clinical patient care roles -- MD, RN, EMS, First Responder, FD, and PD.

Online CPR and First Aid Certifications:

If our current course schedule does not meet your needs, you can take many AHA courses online followed by a Skills Verification with Gunnison Valley Health’s certified AHA Instructors.

Bring your Course Completion Certificate to class (only AHA online courses will be recognized).

  1. Go to onlineaha.org, pay for and complete your chosen course(s), and print the Course Completion Certificate(s)
  2. Sign up for and attend a Skills Verification Session within the 60 period after course completion
  3. Bring your Course Completion Certificate to class
  4. This is a testing session, so students should expect to perform skills proficiently and in a timely manner. Instructors will answer questions, but this is not a comprehensive classroom session.

EMT:

The objective of this course is to provide training and qualify individuals for the National Registry EMT Exams through lectures and hands-on scenarios. Class covers basic emergency medical knowledge and consists of topics such as CPR, bandaging and splinting, use of the Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED), medical emergencies, medication administration, ambulance operations, and trauma care. Course meets, and exceeds, the National Educational Standards. At the end of the course, the successful student will be eligible to sit for the National Registry written and practical tests to achieve EMT certification through the National Registry of EMTs. GVH does not provide EMT certification.

EMT-Intermediate:

With EMT as a pre-requisite, the GVH EMT-Intermediate education program is a 400+ hour program designed to meet and exceed the National Educational Standards for EMT-Intermediate-99. This includes Advanced Life Support skills including, cardiology, pharmacology, and advanced trauma patient management. At the end of the course, the successful student will be eligible to sit for the National Registry written and practical tests to achieve EMT certification through the State of Colorado. GVH does not provide EMT-Intermediate certification. EMT-I students will also be required to pass ACLS, PALS and a final practical examination.

ACLS Re-Certification:

  • The American Heart Association ACLS program is a course designed for healthcare professionals required to respond to cardiac emergencies.
  • This course DOES NOT teach you how to read rhythms. Students must have a basic understanding of rhythms and pharmacology.
  • Students will be required to pass a rhythm strip and a written exam.
  • Students must hold a current ACLS Provider card in order to participate in a recertification course.
  • In preparation for the course all students need to study the AHA ACLS student manual and complete the student self-assessment.
  • The student self-assessment can be found on page ii of your AHA ACLS student manual.
  • It is mandatory for all students to have the AHA ACLS student manual when entering the class.
  • Once you complete your assessment you will need to print your results and bring it along with the manual to class.

PALS Re-Certification:

  • The PALS Course is for healthcare providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children. These include personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, paramedics and others who need a PALS course completion card for job or other requirements.
  • Students must hold a current PALS Provider card in order to participate in a recertification course.
  • In preparation for the course all students need to study the AHA PALS student manual and to complete the student self-assessment.
  • The student self-assessment can be found on page ii of your AHA PALS student manual.
  • It is mandatory for all students to have the AHA PALS student manual when entering the class.
  • Once you complete your assessment you will need to print your results and bring it along with the manual to class.
