Tips for Healthy Eyes

Everyone is always looking to improve their general health by diet and exercise, but how often do you think about your eye health? Ophthalmologists, who are Medical Doctors, are not only concerned that you see well, but also that you take good care of your eyes.

Here are some very important tips for eye health:

Quit smoking. Smoking is dangerous for all body parts, and can increase risk and progression of macular degeneration and cataracts.

Healthy diet. If your diet is full of green leafy vegetables, fruits, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids- you are on the right track. If your diet is deficient, consider a multi-vitamin with Lutein for the best eye health.

Sunglasses. All kids (including babies as young as six months) and adults should be wearing sunglasses all year round. The sunglasses should state 100% UV A and B protection and are essential at our altitude. Sun protection can slow the progression of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Hydration. It is important to maintain good hydration all year round. It is also important to use Artificial Tears (Refresh, Gen Teal, or Thera Tears are good OTC choices) frequently to soothe your eyes and maintain a good tear film for better vision and comfort.

Safety eyewear. Whether you play sports, work outside, or are doing home improvement projects- safety eyewear is a must. We want you to protect your eyes from all types of injuries.

Routine eye exams. Whether your wear glasses or not, a routine eye exam can screen for various eye related diseases as well as examining you for your general health.
