Vaccine For Children

Gunnison Valley Health Family Medicine Clinic is a registered Vaccines For Children (VFC) provider. The VFC program is a federally funded program through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that helps ensure that all children have a better chance of getting their recommended vaccinations on time without cost being a barrier.

What is a Vaccine For Children (VFC) Provider?

A Vaccine For Children (VFC) provider means that we have the ability to provide regular immunizations, at no cost for the vaccine, to uninsured children and those insured through state-funded programs such as Medicaid.

Which children are eligible for VFC?

Children through 18 years of age who meet at least one of the following criteria are eligible to receive VFC vaccine:

  • Medicaid eligible: A child who is eligible for the Medicaid program. (For the purposes of the VFC program, the terms “Medicaid-eligible” and “Medicaid-enrolled” are equivalent and refer to children who have health insurance covered by a state Medicaid program)
  • Uninsured: A child who has no health insurance coverage
  • American Indian or Alaska Native: As defined by the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (25 U.S.C. 1603)
  • Underinsured

Note: Children whose health insurance covers the cost of vaccinations are not eligible for VFC vaccines, even when a claim for the cost of the vaccine and its administration would be denied for payment by the insurance carrier because the plan’s deductible had not been met.

Why should I get my child immunized?

On-time vaccination throughout childhood is essential because it helps provide immunity before children are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases. Immunization is a safe and effective way to protect your babies, young children, and adolescents from at least 15 harmful and contagious diseases. Vaccines are tested to ensure that they are safe and effective for children to receive at the recommended ages.

When should I get my child immunized?

At the Family Medicine Clinic, children can receive vaccines during their well-child visits.
