The Way to Women's Health with Holly Rickert, Family Birth Center Director
Being a strong woman means taking control! With that in mind, here are
a few ways you can be in charge of your physical and mental health.
First, discuss with your physician how frequently you should be going in
for a routine checkup. As you age mammograms and bone density screenings
should be performed more often but you may not need a pap smear as frequently.
Secondly, never underestimate the importance of staying active! Regular
physical activity lowers your risk for heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol,
and Type 2 diabetes. It can also help improve mental function and decrease
the risk of osteoarthritis by increasing bone density. If it’s been
a while since you’ve been active, ease into it and consider seeking
guidance from a personal trainer.
As always, it is very important that you eat a well-balanced diet. Maintain
a good balance between the calories you consume and the calories you expend.
You can visit choosemyplate.gov for help developing a roadmap to healthy eating.
And lastly, don’t forget about the benefit of a good night’s
sleep. Establish a bedtime ritual, avoid caffeine, and minimize screen
time before turning in for the day.
There is no time like the present to celebrate being a woman and to take
control of your health. Don’t forget, healthy living is a lifelong
endeavor you must work on every day.
