Eleven students Complete Gunnison Valley Health’s 2025 Medical Pathways Program

Hands-on hospital experiences shape the next generation of healthcare professionals

Eleven local high school students were recognized in April for completing the 2025 Gunnison Valley Health Medical Pathways Program—an immersive, behind-the-scenes introduction to healthcare careers. Since January, students dedicated one evening each week to explore different areas of the health system through hands-on learning and meaningful conversations with staff. The program is designed to support career planning, build connections with working professionals and inspire the next generation of rural healthcare workers.

This year’s program was the largest and most diverse yet, with 21 Gunnison Valley Health departments participating. Students gained a comprehensive view of rural medicine in action and a deeper understanding of what it takes to operate a full-service health system.

Throughout the program, the students connected with professionals across the organization, from clinical teams like Emergency Medical Services, Surgical Services and Radiology to essential support areas such as Human Resources, Supply Chain and Health and Information Coding.

Students also engaged with a physician panel, where they heard firsthand about the journey of becoming a physician, the realities of rural practice and the evolving landscape of healthcare.

“Programs like Medical Pathways are incredibly impactful for both the students and the healthcare community,” said Joelle Ashley, Director of Marketing and Communications at Gunnison Valley Health. “These students aren’t just learning—they’re building relationships, forming meaningful connections with professionals and discovering how they can make a difference right here in the Gunnison Valley by pursuing a career in healthcare.”

GVH staff who participated in the program volunteered their time and expertise after hours—an effort that did not go unnoticed. “This is a powerful example of how a rural health system can invest in the next generation of healthcare professionals,” said Gunnison Valley Health CEO, Jason Amrich. “Our staff were incredibly generous with their time and knowledge. We’re proud to have a team that values mentorship and community connection in addition to providing excellent care.”

Parents and caregivers played an equally important role, encouraging students to attend each session and supporting their interest in healthcare careers. “The commitment these students made—giving up their weeknights to learn, engage and ask questions—was matched by the support they received at home,” Gunnison Valley Health CEO, Jason Amrich said. “That kind of dedication speaks volumes about the strength of this community and the kind of people who make our valley such a special place to live.”

By introducing local high school students to hands-on experience in healthcare, the Medical Pathways Program demonstrates Gunnison Valley Health’s commitment to investing in the next generation. It’s a meaningful step toward building a healthier, more connected community.
