Gunnison Valley Health’s Low-Cost Blood Draw Has a Record Year Serving 714 in Crested Butte

Gunnison Valley Health’s annual low-cost blood draw returned to Queen of All Saints Parish Hall in Crested Butte June 4–6, offering fast, affordable lab testing to residents. Over the course of three mornings, the event served 714 people, a record number for the Crested Butte event in the last 5 years, highlighting GVH’s commitment to providing accessible, preventive care across the Gunnison Valley.

“Events like this demonstrate our commitment to showing up for our community,” said Jennifer Birnie, Vice President of Community Health and Development at Gunnison Valley Health. “The strong turnout underscores just how vital accessible health care is—particularly in rural areas. For some individuals, this may be one of the few opportunities they have to receive regular care. Preventive lab testing is an essential tool that empowers people to engage proactively in their health, often identifying potential concerns before symptoms even appear.”

A Streamlined Event for Early Detection

Running daily from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., the event featured a broad menu of testing options. Participants could choose from essential screenings such as the Health Screen, Complete Blood Count, and Hemoglobin A1C, as well as more specialized panels including lipid, arthritis, hormone and vitamin tests—all at a reduced cost. Some local businesses have opted to pay for their employees' testing by buying vouchers. Among them is the Gunnison Valley Health Foundation who funded 100 vouchers to provide testing to those who could not afford it, to make testing accessible to everyone.

The event was made possible through GVH’s partnership with It Starts With Me, a trusted provider of low-cost screening services and health events. It also relied on a dedicated team of volunteers, including local phlebotomists, EMTs, lab professionals, GVH staff and community members who ensured each patient received the kind and efficient care needed.

Year-Round Access Through Direct Access Testing

While the June 2025 event was a major success, Gunnison Valley Health offers a year-round option for affordable lab testing through its Direct Access Testing program at the GVH Laboratory.

This program allows individuals to select and pay for their own lab tests. No physician order or appointment required. It's designed to meet the needs of those who are uninsured, underinsured, or looking for more flexibility in managing their health.

Patients simply choose the tests they want, pay upfront, and receive results directly. They can review the results independently or share them with their provider at a time that works best for them.

Direct Access Testing is available on a walk-in basis during weekday hours at the GVH Laboratory in Gunnison, making it a convenient and affordable option for proactive health monitoring throughout the year.

What’s Next: August Event in Gunnison

Gunnison Valley Health’s next low-cost blood draw event is scheduled for August 19–21 at the Fred Field Center in Gunnison. Like the Crested Butte event, it will offer early morning hours, a wide range of test options, and affordable pricing for all community members.

Registration is open now online or by phone at 1-800-217-5866.

“These events make a real difference,” said  Jennifer Birnie. “We’re proud to support community wellness by lowering barriers to essential care. Whether you attend this event or use Direct Access Testing, we’re here to help empower you take charge of your health.”
