What is a Vascular Ultrasound?

Gunnison Valley Health performs a vascular ultrasound to examine the blood circulation in the arms and legs. It can also evaluate arteries or veins in nearly any part of the body. Vascular ultrasound is a noninvasive procedure which means that needles, dyes, radiation or anesthesia are not required.

During a vascular ultrasound, sound waves measure the amount of blood flow in your blood vessels to help identify blockages in the arteries and veins and detect blood clots. Ultrasound has no known harmful effects to your body and provides images of soft tissues that don't show up on x-ray images.

Why might I need a vascular ultrasound?

A vascular ultrasound is performed to:

  • Help monitor the blood flow to organs and tissues throughout the body.
  • Locate and identify blockages and abnormalities for effective treatment.
  • Detect blood clots, such as deep venous thrombosis (DVT), in the major veins of the legs or arms.
  • Evaluate the success of procedures that bypass blood vessels.
  • Determine if there is an enlarged artery (aneurysm).
  • Evaluate varicose veins.
