Some people find their place in healthcare and stay there. Barbara Marks kept finding ways to grow. Over the course of six years, she has worked across some of the most distinct corners of GVH and the broader Gunnison Valley health community, building skills, earning credentials, and quietly becoming one of the more versatile members of our team. 

In July 2026, Barbara completed her Limited Scope Radiology Tech certification and this year is stepping into a new role at GVH's Mountain Clinic in Crested Butte. It is the next chapter in a journey that has always been pointed in one direction: forward. 

A Career Built One Step at a Time 

Barbara joined the GVH family in 2020 as a peer support specialist in Behavioral Health, back when the department was just finding its footing. From there she moved into the Emergency Department as a unit coordinator, earned her Medical Assistant certification, and spent time with the Oncology Department serving patients through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. 

Each role taught her something new. And each time she felt she had learned what she came to learn, she started looking for the next challenge. 

“I have always wanted to do more,” Barbara says. “Every role I have had at GVH gave me something, and I tried to give back everything I had. But I kept feeling pulled toward something bigger, and radiology was where that pull led me.” 

Radiology School While Working Full Time 

Deciding to go back to school while working in healthcare is not a small commitment. Barbara leaned on trusted colleagues and friends to help her figure out the best path forward, then enrolled in a Limited Scope Radiology program and got to work. 

“I am excited to just learn in this new role,” she says. “I see myself with radiology for the long haul. This is the career I have been working toward.” 

Her longer-term goal is full scope radiology certification, which she plans to pursue within the next two years. 

The Program That Made It Possible 

One of the things that made Barbara’s transition into radiology possible was GVH’s Tuition Reimbursement Program. For team members looking to advance their education or earn new credentials, the program helps cover the cost of schooling and professional development. 

Barbara describes the experience of using it as straightforward and genuinely supported. 

“The process was easy, and HR was there for me any time I had a question,” she says. “I want others to know that if you are thinking about going through the Tuition Reimbursement process, I personally recommend it. Our Human Resources team will be there for you at any time.” 

For Barbara, it was not just a financial benefit. It was a signal that GVH was invested in her future. 

A Story Still Being Written 

Barbara’s path is a reminder that a career in healthcare does not have to follow a straight line. Some of the most valuable members of a team are the ones who bring experience from across the system, who understand patients from multiple vantage points, and who never stop asking what comes next.
