What is Internal Medicine?

Internal medicine focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and care of adults for both routine and complex medical issues. Internal medicine specialists, or internists, receive specialized training in the handling of the broad and comprehensive spectrum of illnesses that affect adults. They are recognized as experts in diagnosis, treatment of chronic illness and health promotion and disease prevention. Internists are not limited to one type of medical problem or organ system and are able to provide comprehensive care for adults with a wide range of health care needs.
